
In my training, sprinting is the main stimulus. Everything else feeds and supports it. We do it first, when the athlete is freshest and fatigue isn’t interfering with the quality of the work. During the offseason, we’ll sometimes sprint up to 3 times per week, but when frequency goes up, the volume has to be very intentional. For non sprinters, I’m not trying to turn them into track athletes. I’m trying to accumulate high quality, fast repetitions so they become more coordinated and efficient at high speed. And different sports tend to come with different movement signatures. Soccer players often don’t use their arms particularly well and can be a little more backside dominant. Lacrosse players can look more rigid through the upper body because they spend so much time running while carrying a stick. Basketball players tend to operate in shorter, choppier windows and don’t get as many chances to truly open up and hit max velocity. Football players are often very good at pushing and grinding, but sometimes need to learn how to relax and let speed happen. The goal isn’t to make every athlete look like a sprinter during competition. It’s to maximize the quality of the training rep. If squat mechanics are limiting the load you can handle or making the movement less efficient, you’d probably adjust them. Sprinting is no different. Better mechanics can mean better output, better use of the physical qualities you already have, and less unnecessary mechanical cost. That’s a big part of what I cover in Speed Kills.
