The second best artwork in the collection The beauty of having paint left over from other artworks in this collection is that I can bundle them onto a fresh canvas, sweep the colours into one another and see what happens. The different shades of blues that were once so distinct all of a sudden morph into a wild whirlwind of sky blues, upon which I painted 10 airplanes. These are the ten last airlines I flew with on our journeys throughout the world. Journeys that have opened my eyes to just how big and vast our earth is- yet how small the world has become metaphorically as a result of modern advances such as the very planes painted on this canvas- not to mention our mobile devices. So much has happened this year. Travel, exhibitions, kids… life. I often feel extremely overwhelmed by these things I work so hard to fulfil which is exacerbated by being connected to the world 24/7. It’s during flights that I really get the chance to just disconnect from the world on my phone and connect with new worlds of possibilities out there. I wanted to capture the silhouette of an airplane to link to the idea of being cut off from the world when you put your phone on ‘Airplane Mode’. It’s a special and personal piece. Artworks as big and as riddled with tiny planes as this one can take months to create and as a result become a labour of love. It also references all the airlines I recently flew with. A wild thought when you see it laid out like this. ‘Airplane Mode’ will not be for sale but will be on show at my upcoming ‘High’ exhibition in Berlin from 2-4 October. I hope to see you there. Ref.
