But healthy parenting contains a strange long-term assignment: Gradually surrender that authority. The child becomes an adult. They develop their own values. They make decisions you wouldn’t make. They build a life you couldn’t have designed for them. And eventually love has to survive the loss of control. Advice can remain. Wisdom can remain. Connection can deepen. But autonomy has to belong to the adult child.
