In 2016, an unusual Uber scam began happening in China where people would sign up as drivers with uncanny profile pictures. People would see their drivers picture, get freaked out, and cancel their ride. The scammers would then collect a cancellation fee, and would repeat the process. It was dubbed the “ghost driver scam” and was later fixed through Uber’s advanced verification system.
