Monarch caterpillars eat milkweed. Not mostly, not by preference. It's the only thing they can grow up on, which is why the whole map of where monarchs go is drawn around wherever this stuff happens to be growing. This particular one is tropical milkweed, and in California it's the one people argue about. The native species die back for the winter. This one doesn't, so monarchs that find it can skip migrating and stay put, and a parasite accumulates on leaves that never drop. If you've got it near the coast, the usual advice is to cut it to the ground in the fall and let it come back. Nothing here is making sound out loud.
