Juniper music 🌬️🌲 High in the mountains of British Columbia, we recorded the bioelectric signals of a juniper growing flat across bare rock, and the sounds got wild. This is a conifer. The same kind of plant as the trees a thousand feet below, built the same way, and it's ankle high for one reason. Wind. Up here it doesn't really stop. It strips anything that stands up. It drags water out of a needle faster than the plant can pull more up. In winter it carries ice and sandblasts whatever is left exposed. So the whole plant stays down in the couple of inches of still air pressed right against the stone, low enough that the snow covers it and insulates it instead of shearing it off. Every branch on this thing is lying down, and they are all lying down about the same thing. It pays for that in speed. A mat like this, a few feet across a rock, can be older than the people standing over it, and nothing about it says so. No trunk to read, no rings, nothing announcing anything. It just gets very slightly wider every year for a very long time, next to snow, in a place where almost nothing else bothers. The sound is wild because the place is.
