Oxeye sunflower music 🌻🎶 In British Columbia, we recorded the bioelectric signals of an oxeye sunflower. It isn't a sunflower and it isn't a daisy. What it is, is a couple hundred flowers standing very close together, pretending to be one. Every orange petal around the outside is a complete flower on its own. The domed middle is all the rest of them, packed into a spiral and opening a ring at a time from the outer edge inward, so the same head keeps going for weeks. Bunching them up like that is for the bees. One flower reads as a single big target from across a field, and once something lands it can walk the whole thing instead of flying it. Here's what separates this from an actual sunflower, though. On a real sunflower those outer petals are advertising and nothing else. They're sterile. They pull the eye in and that's the entire job. On this one they aren't. Every petal you can see is a working flower that will set its own seed. There's nothing on it that's only there to be looked at. Nothing here is making sound out loud. PlantWave reads tiny changes in conductivity between two points on the plant and turns those changes into notes as they happen. We chose the instrument.
