
Lupine music ๐๐ถ In British Columbia, we recorded the bioelectric signals of a lupine. Most of what this plant is made of came out of the air. Nitrogen is about four fifths of the atmosphere and almost nothing alive can touch it. It sits up there in pairs, bonded so tightly that when we crack it industrially we need a few hundred degrees and a few hundred atmospheres of pressure to do it. A lupine skips all of that. It grows small nodules on its roots, moves bacteria in, feeds them sugar, and takes nitrogen back in a form it can build a body out of. It's pulling raw material down out of the sky, quietly, at the temperature of the ground it's standing in. Which is why lupines turn up where nothing else will. Gravel, a raw road cut, glacial till, volcanic ash. They don't need to find good soil because they arrive with the hard part already solved, and when they die back the nitrogen stays in the ground. After Mount St. Helens erupted, a small prairie lupine was one of the first living things found on the bare pumice, years ahead of anything else, and the patches it enriched are where the rest of the mountain started over from.
