Teach your child that their safety is more important than being polite. If an unfamiliar person approaches them from a vehicle or on foot, their plan should be simple: • Don’t stop or engage • Don’t move closer to answer a question • Create distance immediately • Run toward a populated, familiar safe place • Yell for help and alert a trusted adult If a vehicle is following them, running in the opposite direction from the vehicle’s direction of travel may give them more time by forcing the driver to turn around. A family safety password provides an additional layer if someone claims, “Your parent sent me.” But the password shouldn’t encourage a child to approach a stranger or vehicle. They should maintain their distance—and if the person doesn’t know the correct word, leave immediately and get help.
