The Pilot Dr. Grip was born from research into writer’s cramp and how the thickness and shape of a pen could reduce strain while writing. Its unusually thick, cushioned grip looked completely different from other pens when it launched in 1991, but it sold one million units in its first year. The design soon expanded to mechanical pencils and became one of Pilot’s most recognizable stationery lines.
