I’m in North Carolina and so here’s some black history from the region. On May 13, 1862, Robert Smalls staged one of the most dangerous, high-stakes naval escapes in history. Armed only with his knowledge of Charleston Harbor, he disguised himself as a Confederate captain, stole the CSS Planter, picked up his family under cover of night, and tricked enemy checkpoints into letting them pass. Once in free waters, he surrendered the ship and its military secrets to the Union Navy. His brave act helped persuade President Lincoln to enlist Black soldiers, and after the war, Smalls was elected to five terms in the U.S. House of Representatives.
