Why is it so hard for some Black British people to understand what a Black American is? Our great great grandmothers were raped by slave masters. Some of our ancestors were bred on farms like property, sold, and sold again. And out of that horror came jazz, R&B, hip hop, gospel, the Black church. The culture the entire world consumes right now was built here by us. So when I see Black British commentators mock Black Americans for saying “I’m from Texas” or “I’m from Chicago,” or claim we “don’t know where we come from” while acting like Jamaica and Brazil and Haiti aren’t the exact same story as America, I need answers. This isn’t a diaspora war. It’s a real question about how deep the internalized British xenophobia toward America runs, even among Black people who should know better. Jamaicans are from Jamaica.
