Degradation isn’t an unfortunate side effect of the structure, it’s inherent within it. It takes different forms everywhere we look.. land, water, community, relationship, even in the way we’re taught to understand our own place in the world. Exploit, extract, simplify, abandon and then act surprised when what remains doesn’t thrive. But healing is different. Healing is a natural process. Life is always reaching toward relationship, complexity and abundance when the conditions allow it. That doesn’t mean leaving things untouched. Sometimes healing needs tending hands. It means paying attention to recognize what has been lost, what is overcrowded, what needs opening, what needs protecting, what needs harvesting, and what needs help returning. The more intimately we learn the place we’re in.. the plants, animals, soils, water, seasons, disturbances and relationships.. the harder it becomes to imagine ourselves as separate from it. Because when we learn the place we are in, we begin to learn our place within it. That’s where restoration actually begins. #restoration #tending #ecosystems
