Major Detroit news: the Gordie Howe International Bridge is officially open! ๐บ๐ธ๐จ๐ฆ๐ Today, the new bridge opens to vehicle traffic, creating a new connection between Detroit and Windsor across the Detroit River and marking the first new bridge crossing the Detroit River in nearly a century. Stretching approximately 1.5 miles from end to end, the six-lane bridge features an 853-meter main span, the longest main span of any cable-stayed bridge in North America. Its two 722-foot towers now stand prominently along Detroitโs riverfront, with the bridge crossing the Detroit River without a single support pier in the water. The new crossing joins the Ambassador Bridge and Detroit-Windsor Tunnel in connecting the two neighboring cities, adding another major route between Detroit and Canada. And soon, crossing the border wonโt just be for cars. ๐ฒ๐ถ Beginning August 5, pedestrians and cyclists will be able to cross between Detroit and Windsor on a dedicated 1.5-mile multi-use path. The path is separated from vehicle traffic and free to use, creating an entirely new way to experience both sides of the Detroit River. The path will also connect into trail networks on both sides of the border, including the Joe Louis Greenway and Iron Belle Trail in Detroit and the Trans Canada Trail system in Windsor. For Detroiters and visitors alike, the new bridge creates another way to experience our international region, whether youโre driving across the river or, beginning next month, exploring two countries by bike or on foot. โค๏ธ Share this with someone you want to cross the Gordie Howe International Bridge with! #VisitDetroit #Detroit #GordieHoweBridge #DetroitNews
