Last week, Starbucks whipped up a frenzy over its limited-edition $30 bear cups, some of which are being re-sold on eBay for over $500.
Meanwhile, Starbucks has been silencing its workers. Now baristas across the US are on strike, with 92% of workers voting to walk out for fair contracts. Starbucks made billions last year, while CEO Brian Niccol was handed $96 million for just 120 days of work. Finalising union contracts would cost Starbucks less than one day’s sales, but instead of negotiating fairly, the company has broken labour laws hundreds of times.
As workers organise, Starbucks is closing stores across the US, Canada and the UK. The company claims these are “underperforming” locations, but many believe the closures are tied to global boycotts and Starbucks’ lawsuit against its union after workers voiced support for Palestine.
