💜link in my bio to read the zine💜 Excited to finally share this labour of love. I’d been searching for a while for a way to put cash directly into the hands of artists and members of the scene who could really use it right now. But then when @Relentless offered me the chance to curate something more detailed I realised it was also a great opportunity to create some movement around these under-sung scenes outside the major cities in England. I recruited 3 artists that I love, Boo, Mia Lily, and ZMARAK (from Stockton-on-Tees, Blackpool, and Bradford), and we curated three club nights in their hometowns, with their chosen lineups. All local acts, locally designed flyers, great local venues. In every city I DJed, chopped it up with the locals and heard all kinds of stories in the smoking areas. It reminded me a lot of home in every case. And in each place the outpouring of gratitude and respect for what we were doing was overwhelming. If you made it down to one of the nights, I see u and thank u. This project is a part of a wider campaign to not only support local venues and talent but to showcase that artists only need to be given opportunities to show their skill and talent, regardless of whether or not they’re from somewhere familiar ( I’m proof of that myself ‼️) - if you're aspiring DJ or producer we hope this project can show you that. I’m also very proud to present Local - a freely available zine curated by Toothgrinder and showcasing not just the artists from our nights, but venues, record stores, photographers and local characters from each city. It’s an amazing document of what happens when you take the time to passionately investigate, and also an important first hand account of what it’s like trying to create something in these places. I can’t do it justice by describing it here so go and check it out for yourself and learn about some great artists and places. This is just a glimpse of an ongoing project celebrating local talent, venues, and communities. It’s taken a lot of work from a lot of people so I hope you can enjoy it and take something from it.
