ChatGPT basically stopped citing Reddit completely on August 14th. According to a new report from Promptwatch, ChatGPT used to actively cite Reddit constantly. Reddit actually made up over 15% of ChatGPT citations. This became a huge business, agencies cropped up promising to get brands into ChatGPT search results all through gaming reddit. But on August 14th, it fell off a cliff. Reddit citations appear to be effectively 0% now And, Reddit is also slowly losing citation share in Google AI Overviews and AI Mode. So what changed? Reddit has made an effort to lock down their product to prevent AI scrapers. This is all happening as the company is ramping up its own AI efforts, Using AI to turn Reddit posts into AI generated podcasts and short videos. But the big shift here came from ChatGPT changing the way it searched for information. In early August ChatGPT began to use site:operator when performing searches. This means the AI tool no longer pulls from the open web as a starting point, and instead goes to specific sites to pull information. This is why 32% of ChatGPT citations are now links to docs and help centers. Small company pages also dropped from 66% to 32%, and ChatGPT now pulls from more established companies (Salesforce, Google, Shopify). This isn't all bad news for consumers. Reddit was increasingly being gamed, and often led to low quality information. Very famously, a Reddit post was actually the reason that Google’s AI tool once told someone to use glue to get cheese to stay on pizza. I think it's really important to pay attention to these small changes in these AI tools.
