Welcome back to Message a Midwife, the series where Licensed Midwife & Doula Jessica Diggs answers your most-asked questions about pregnancy, postpartum, and breastfeeding. In honor of Breastfeeding Awareness Month, today’s question asks, “How do you know if your baby is getting enough milk?” In the early days, babies need to eat every 1-3 hours for about 10-15 minutes per breast. Most of the time, they’ll let you know when they’re hungry and when they’re done. Here are a couple cues to look out for… Hunger signs can include: 👉Head moving from side to side 👉Opening and closing their mouth 👉 Putting their hand or fist by their mouth 👉Making a sucking motion with their lips 👉Nuzzling the breasts Full signs can include: 👉Unlatching from the breast 👉Turning away 👉 Relaxing their body 👉 Opening their fists Save this post as an easy guide or send it to a friend who’s expecting or in the early days of feeding 💛
