How to make your GK training more match realistic… 😂 SERVICE MAKES THE SESSION. ❌ Not “perfect” or “clean” service. ✅ Contextual service. “My technique is a result of your technique. My movement is a result of your movement.” The service we give goalkeepers should reflect the situation we’re actually trying to prepare them for. If we’re working from a specific area of the pitch, ask: 💭 How does the ball realistically get into that area? On the floor? Aerial? First time? After a touch? 💭 Who is likely to be there? A winger? Striker? Midfielder? Defender? 💭 How might they strike it? Think about their foot, angle, pressure, arrival, body orientation and available space. 💭 How much time do they have? Because time and space completely change the potential outcome. We often see goalkeepers working in the “right” areas, but the information they receive doesn’t match the situation. ⚠️ No pass or movement into the zone, so the GK always starts perfectly positioned and set. ⚠️ Straight volleys into the hands/body. ⚠️ Dead balls driven into the hands/body. ⚠️ Half volleys repeatedly served from the same position. ⚠️ No obstruction, delay or uncertainty. Do this repeatedly and we can create false patterns. Your “set” isn’t one fixed position or shape. It changes based on what is happening in front of you. Knowing a coach is about to volley the ball from their hands towards you creates a completely different problem to a moving ball arriving at an attacker who could drive it across you, whip it towards the near post, take another touch or pass. 👀 The visual information matters. It’s not just about dealing with the eventual shot. It’s about recognising the information before the shot that helps you anticipate what might happen next. And you don’t need 10 players, mannequins or a full team to achieve this. If you’ve only got one server and one goalkeeper, the service can still represent the situation you’re trying to recreate. Context creates decisions. 🔑 Prepare goalkeepers for the problems they’ll actually have to solve on matchday. #themoderndaygk #goalkeepers #gktraining
