On this day, 53 years ago, we lost J.R.R. Tolkien. On September 2, 1973, the man who gave us Middle-earth passed away at the age of 81. He left behind far more than stories. He left behind a world that generations of readers would grow up in, return to, and carry with them. Tolkien would never know just how many lives his work would touch. He would never see the generations who would discover Middle-earth long after he was gone. Yet 53 years later, we are still here. The man is gone, but Middle-earth remains.
