I found this Gucci by Tom Ford dress for $200 in a thrift shop about four years ago (I have more thoughts on thrift-shop-designer-pricing but I'll save that gripe for later), only then I didn't know it was Gucci by Tom Ford, I only just recently found that out when I came across its twin in black online for a thousand dollars or so. All I knew about the dress was that I liked its color and that when you want to wear it you have to suck in really hard and pray the zipper chooses not to take some of your skin with it. It's a fabulous dress which I've worn many times and now there's all this hullabaloo about "Gucci by Tom Ford". I get it, but also, I like Saint Laurent by Tom Ford more. I like Saint Laurent more in general. I've been thinking a lot about how my style ebbs and flows but there are pieces I attach myself to which predate my understanding of them. For example, when I bought this dress I was still wearing a silk Paul Frank pajama top as an undershirt for an overpriced APC sweater that I'd pair with cheap cargo khakis and my suede Miu Miu ballet flats with the double leather-grommet mary jane straps. What a mess. But I knew then that this dress was something I identified with, I just couldn't pinpoint why. As my style grew and evolved, I got closer and closer to The Dress. To the idea the dress represents. There were times I didn't touch the dress for months because I was on a completely separate wave, perhaps my Harajuku moment or my very, *very* short-lived sporty phase (think Ancuta Sarca or Paolina Russo). But despite it all I never even considered giving up the dress for a second, because I knew for a fact it was a piece with longevity, with power, with some magical quality that I couldn't get back if I gave it up. And so I'm back to the dress, and it's not even so much that I'm really back to the dress, but more that the dress was the direction I was always heading, quietly, even when I couldn't tell, or even when it felt like I was I was going the opposite way entirely. Like even when it was unclear, I was communing with some future version of myself, or subconsciously cognizant of what was yet to come. The dress didn't predict the future but rather, the future found me early? The dress didn't shape my path but instead represented the path that always existed? The dress, the dress, the dress! (>Like Dr. Yueh saying, "The Tooth.." in Dune (1984)). Oh whatever. I bought a dress because I liked it and now I still like it maybe even more than I did when I bought it and isn't that special enough? I think so.
