This isn’t a defense. It isn’t a condemnation. It’s the perspective of someone who survived a similar kind of tragedy. Unlike the Clancy case, my story was never public. But living through an attempted homicide by my own mother has shaped the way I view cases like this forever. Two things can be true at once: we can grieve deeply for innocent children, believe there should be accountability, and still ask difficult questions about mental illness, psychiatric care, and the responsibility of the systems meant to help people in crisis. My heart is with those babies, their family, and every life forever changed by this tragedy. I hope whatever comes next brings accountability where it’s deserved, healing where it’s possible, and meaningful conversations that help prevent future tragedies. These are my opinions, informed by my own lived experience. I know not everyone will agree, and that’s okay.
