Carol Highsmith is a photographer who has spent decades traveling around the United States, creating a vast archive of landscapes, architecture, and people. She has been regularly donating her photos to the Library of Congress since 1992 making them available as public domain images. Her archive there is expected to reach 100,000 photos. In 2016, Highsmith sued Getty Images for $1B when she found out they were selling over 18,000 her free photos to the public for profit. She learned this when she received an invoice from Getty to pay for her own photo on her own website.
