In 2017, a new WWF project funded by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), with support from the Indonesian government, aimed to reduce the number of leatherback turtles poached to zero. To protect nesting leatherbacks and their eggs, the team started working with government officials at all levels—village, provincial, regional, and federal—ensuring a collaborative and locally led approach. The strategy includes community outreach, education, local regulations, and year-round monitoring. Since then, local communities on Buru Island have reduced leatherback sea turtle egg poaching from more than 60% to virtually zero. Follow the link in our bio to learn more.
