Chinese robotics companies have been competing in the World Humanoid Robot Games in Beijing, with at least one major human world record being surpassed. The Tianzhuo humanoid developed by China’s Beijing Innovation Center of Humanoid Robotics beat robots from Unitree and Honor to record a time of 9.39 seconds in the 100-meter dash, which is faster than Usain Bolt’s 9.58 human world record and has stood since 2009. But several competitors in the 100 meters spectacularly fell and even burst into flames after crashing full speed into the safety barriers beyond the finish line. Some robots were stretchered off. The World Humanoid Robot Games sees robots compete in conventional sports but also more practical competitions too, based around real world applications such as customer service or factory work.
