Trees are one of the most effective tools cities have to combat heat. Trees act like natural air conditioners by providing shade and releasing water they help to cool our neighbourhoods and improve air quality. Strategically placed trees in cities can reduce local temperatures significantly, making cities more resilient during heatwaves. In some cases, urban trees can even absorb more carbon dioxide during summer than local cars emit. Trees alone will not solve the problem of extreme heat in our cities, however, they are a practical, accessible and cost-effective solution that helps create cooler spaces for our communities.
