Students should never have to choose between their safety and their education. New research from The Trevor Project and @Glisten (formerly GLSEN) shows just how deeply school environments shape the experiences of trans, nonbinary, and gender-expansive students: The data is clear: Inclusion matters. Students with more supportive educators and positive LGBTQ+ representation in class reported higher GPAs. Students exposed to more discriminatory policies and negative experiences were more likely to miss school and experience chronic absenteeism. Students already know what helps them feel supported: Using their name and pronouns, respecting their gender expression, making sure that they can access facilities, activities, clubs, and spaces that align with who they are. These aren’t small things. They can help determine whether a young person feels safe enough to show up, participate, learn and thrive.
