5 signs of OCD in college students that often go unnoticed: 1️⃣ Avoiding basic campus tasks: Getting a new student ID, figuring out how to connect to the printer, going to the registrar, or fixing an issue with your account might turn into something you put off for weeks. If you’re stuck thinking about saying something wrong, looking stupid, or being judged, avoiding the interaction can become a compulsion that gives you temporary relief. 2️⃣ Getting stuck trying to make the “right” academic choice (like choosing a major): What if you pick the wrong major and regret it? What if another capstone topic would be better? What if you choose the wrong classes and mess up your future? You may research for hours, compare every option, or repeatedly ask other people what they think, trying to finally feel certain about your decision. 3️⃣ Taking hours longer than everyone else on assignments: You understand the material and technically finished the assignment an hour ago, but you still can’t submit it. Maybe you keep rereading the same paragraph, rewriting sentences until they feel “right,” or checking for any possibility that you accidentally plagiarized, wrote something offensive, or attached the wrong file. 4️⃣ Never raising your hand or asking questions in class: For some students, this comes down to shyness or anxiety. OCD can add fears like, “What if I blurt out my intrusive thought?” or “What if I accidentally say something horrible?” Staying silent, even when you know exactly what you want to say, can become a way of avoiding that uncertainty. 5️⃣ Checking emails and messages over and over before sending: One email to your professor somehow turns into 30 minutes of checking. You reread every sentence, inspect the attachment again, and make sure you didn’t accidentally type a slur, say something inappropriate, or attach a private photo. And after you finally hit send? You might reopen it and start checking all over again. College can give OCD so many places to hide because these behaviors can easily look like perfectionism, procrastination, shyness, indecisiveness, or normal academic stress. That can make it especially difficult to recognize when OCD may actually be behind them. If you’re noticing these patterns in yourself and wondering if OCD could be behind them, specialized treatment can help.
