Is sugar really addictive? No (well, at least not in the same way someone can be addicted to alcohol, cocaine, or nicotine) If sugar really was as addictive as these substances, people would be shoveling down pure table sugar from the bag in their kitchen, but that never happens Most people who feel “addicted” to sugar aren't dealing with an addiction at all They're dealing with one of two things Either: 1. Restriction. The second you label a food "bad" and cut it out, your brain becomes obsessed with it. It's why the people who diet the hardest tend to binge the hardest or 2. Food dependence. There's a real clinical concept for the pattern people are calling "food addiction," and it's not the same thing. Addiction is a substance changing your actual brain chemistry Dependence is a behavioral pattern around certain foods (the loss of control, the overeating, the inability to stop, etc.) but driven by learned responses and environment, not by the food doing something to your brain That's why abstinence doesn't fix it, the food was never the problem The real problem framing "sugar as a drug" is that it creates the exact behavior it claims to prevent, restriction and black-and-white thinking which is what leads to people feeling “addicted” to food in the first place Unfortunately if you've ever had to watch someone deal with real drug or alcohol addiction in your own life, you know it's not the same thing at all #gym #muscle #sugar #nutrition #health
