Seriously someone needs to turn this into a movie! The first men to walk on the moon were basically wearing a high-tech brassiere. Not even a little joking. When NASA put out a bid in 1962 for the Apollo spacesuit, the expected winners were major defense contractors like your Hamilton Standard, Goodrich, Litton Industries. Then out of nowhere Playtex submitted a bid. A “bra” company. Despite not having any aerospace experience, Playtex’s 21 layer hand stitched space suit blew all its competitors out of the water. The suit was built almost entirely by female seamstresses. Every stitch was done by hand because if even one stitch more than 1/64 of an inch off, then the suit failed inspection because a failed suit could mean an astronaut’s death. Eleanor “Ellie” Foraker was in charge of this army of seamstresses. She went from the diaper-cover assembly line to NASA’s spacesuit assembly supervisor. She practically didn’t leave the plant for three years to ensure the safety of these space suits. One small stitch for a man.
