Douglas Tompkins, founder of The North Face, quietly became one of the biggest private conservationists the world has ever seen. Over the course of his life, the outdoor clothing pioneer bought up more than two million acres of wilderness across Chile and Argentina, with the aim of protecting it from development for good. We can't be sure exactly how history will remember the scale of what he achieved, but it seems the land is now set to remain protected as national parks for generations to come.
