Security fencing on a notorious north Belfast interface, put up during the Holy Cross school blockade, is being removed almost 25 years to the day after the dispute broke out. The fencing was erected in 2001 to offer increased protection to Mass-goers and parishioners visiting Holy Cross church, which had come under attack from the Woodvale Road as tensions rose in the area. A major police and Army operation was mobilised in September 2001 as loyalists attempted to stop children from walking past the predominantly Protestant Glenbryn area to school each morning. Speaking to the Belfast Telegraph as the barriers were removed this week, Fr Gary Donegan, who accompanied the schoolgirls on their walk to school every morning, welcomed the move as a step in the right direction.
