Convincing 8 billion people to stop celebrating traditions—or shutting down a $15 billion industry— isn’t realistic. So instead, I asked myself: How can I inspire people to celebrate more sustainably? I’m not a perfect example. If you’d told me 10 years ago that I’d quit going through 7 Poland Spring bottles a day, I would’ve laughed. But a simple challenge from a friend and the purchase of a Hydro Flask shifted my mindset. Now imagine the impact we could have if we reduced our plastic footprint by swapping out balloons and plastic party décor for paper alternatives. And while pool noodles are plastic, reusing them is still a step in the right direction compared to single-use decorations. I’m not saying I’ll never use balloons again or that I’ll eliminate plastic completely—I’m far from perfect. But small changes add up, and they get us thinking.
