On August 15, 1846, the “Californian” newspaper was published in Monterey by Walter Colton and Robert Semple. This was the first newspaper in California and was published weekly using a wooden printing press, which was originally brought to Monterey from Mexico City by Augustín Zamorano in 1834. That press would eventually print Sacramento’s first newspaper in California, the Placer Times, by Edward Kemble beginning in April 1849. In this video, Jared discussed the history of the newspaper and its connection to Sutter’s Fort State Historic Park. We even have a reproduction copy of that newspaper in our trade store room. #onthisday #suttersfort #castateparks #museumtok #learnontiktok
