Have you ever heard of a cooper before? A cooper is a skilled craftsperson who specializes in making casks, butter churns, and buckets, essentially items that involve hoops and staves. Being the standard shipping container of the time, casks and barrels were important for exporting a variety of items from Sutter’s Fort such as wheat, flour, hardtack, brandy, salted salmon, and pickled vegetables. In this video, Marco discusses the historical importance of casks, shows examples of cooperage around the Fort, and the environmental and cultural impacts of the demand for barrels in the 1840s. Sutter's Fort State Historic Park is a California State Park located in the Midtown Sacramento, California. #suttersfort #castateparks #sacramento #museumtok #learnontiktok
