Big Mama Thornton was the first artist to record "Hound Dog" in 1952, a song written specifically for her by Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller. The song became a No. 1 R&B hit in 1953, sold more than 500,000 copies, and is considered an important early influence on rock and roll. Thornton also recorded "Ball and Chain," later made famous by Janis Joplin. Although other artists earned millions from recording her songs, Thornton received little compensation because she did not own the publishing rights.
