“Dogs love me” is not a good enough reason to pet random dogs that are nervous or fearful. Consent is extremely important, and if you want to teach your dog to be confident around guests, tell your guest to treat your dog as if they are invisible. Once your fearful dog is okay in a neutral setting with new people, now it is time to create a positive association. How do you do that? Find the things that make your dog the happiest and do it with the new people. That typically looks like going on a hike with a long leash, playing ball, or with their favorite tug toy. remember to always allow your dog to sniff all new people uninterrupted. Every time your dog does this, they build more confidence in going up to sniff strangers. The second somebody reaches their hand down to pet, your dog will immediately lose trust with that person, and by proxy, you, the person who is supposed to keep them safe.
