You couldn’t pay me enough money to walk inside a dog park. I just don’t trust other people and their dogs enough to take my dogs in there. However, the outside of a dog park can be one of the best places to train. This is especially true for reactive dogs. When you’re working with a reactive dog, there are two big things you have to understand: distance and intensity. The more intense the trigger is, the more distance your dog usually needs. The less intense the trigger is, the closer you may be able to work. At a dog park, the dogs are usually very intense. They’re running, barking, chasing, wrestling, and moving all over the place. But the important part is they can’t get to you. That gives you a controlled opportunity to train around intense dogs without those dogs directly walking toward you and your dog. Use the outside of the dog park to your advantage. Keep distance, reward calm choices, practice eye contact, work obedience, and teach your dog that seeing other dogs does not mean they need to explode.
