Dogs should not be growling at and biting their humans. That is not something we brush off, laugh about, or hope goes away on its own. We need to create and enforce boundaries before that behavior becomes normal. There are certain non-negotiables with dogs. If your dog is growling at you over a couch, bed, doorway, food bowl, toy, or any other space, they no longer get free access to that thing. You are the authority figure in the house, and your dog needs to understand that access to certain spaces and resources comes with rules. Don’t put a Band-Aid on a fatal wound. If your dog believes they have authority over you, you are going to have a much bigger problem on your hands. Whether we’re working with dogs in Pittsburgh, DC, Cincinnati, or Boston, this is one of the first things we look at. Who is creating the rules, who is enforcing them, and does the dog actually respect them?
