To be totally clear… I am truly in the thick of it right now. These last days will make or break us. But I do believe that I can make it to the start line. Which, for those who don’t know, is the impossible part. Everything beyond that is just a bonus. For the last year, every day of my life has been spent working on Phoenix do Mar. From the outside, she may not look all that different to the untrained eye. But everything above and beneath the surface has been touched, rebuilt, replaced, and strengthened, with my hands. She is a very different boat than the one that became my new home a year ago. This has been the hardest undertaking of my life. There have been days I thought I was finally getting ahead, only to tear something apart again the next morning. There’s even been a few days where Ive seriously thought about quitting. There have been failures, mistakes, setbacks, and more blood, sweat, and even tears left on this boat than I knew I had to give. To quote Captain Jack Aubrey from Master and Commander: “There’s enough of my blood in the woodwork for this ship to be a relative.” Phoenix do Mar, I have given you everything. Everything. Every day, Every thought, and every dollar. I wear your scars from head to toe. You have fought me every step of the way, but that is exactly how it needed to be. Because in 40 days, I am going to ask even more from you. I stand here looking at you now and I feel proud. Confident. Aside from needing new sails that will go on tomorrow, I believe you are ready. Perhaps more ready than I am. My strength lies in how well I know you. Every system. Every wire. Every hose. Every sound. Every weakness. Every strength. I know more about you than I know about myself. My only real ask is that when the time comes and I need strength, let me find it in you. In 40 days, you and I will show everyone what we’re made of. More importantly, we find out for ourselves. 40 days.
