Who started it? Somewhere along a Romanian mountain road, two bear cub brothers are conducting the sort of diplomatic negotiations usually settled with paws, teeth and absolutely no adult supervision. They tumble through the roadside grass like two furry drunks arguing over the last chair in a bar, while their mother watches from a judicious distance. She has the unmistakable posture of a parent who has intervened seventeen times already and has now decided that natural selection can handle the afternoon shift. Romania is home to one of Europe’s largest populations of brown bears, with much of their habitat threaded through the Carpathians. Cubs ordinarily remain with their mother for roughly two years, learning where to forage, what to avoid and, apparently, exactly how far sibling patience can be stretched before somebody gets bitten on the backside. What looks like a miniature ursine civil war is often play fighting, an important rehearsal for strength, coordination and the considerably less forgiving encounters of adulthood. Mother knows this. Mother has seen this episode before. There is something wonderfully familiar in the whole ridiculous tableau. Brotherhood compressed into wrestling, indignation and immediate reconciliation, while an exhausted parent observes the pandemonium with the stoicism of an ancient mountain. We like to imagine wilderness as solemn and majestic, but sometimes the Carpathians serve up slapstick instead: two brothers settling matters in the weeds and one mother silently reconsidering every decision that brought her here. Maybe family is family, whether the kitchen has walls or stretches across an entire forest. Who wins this one? And whose side is mom on?
