Can weather keep secrets? From Caraiman Chalet, the Bucegi Mountains tumble toward the Prahova Valley in extravagant shades of green, their slopes darkened and polished by a light summer rain. Clouds drift through the ravines like slow smoke, brushing the ridges before dissolving into the forest below. Then, from somewhere inside that wet confusion, half a rainbow appears. Not the immaculate arch from a children’s book, but a solitary blade of colour rising from the clouds, as if the mountain had been keeping it hidden. At roughly 2,025 metres, Caraiman Chalet occupies one of those gloriously precarious positions where the Bucegi seem to drop straight toward Bușteni. Moist air rising from the valley collides with colder conditions higher on the massif, and the scenery can mutate with startling speed. Rain becomes mist, mist tears open into sunlight, and sunlight meeting suspended droplets performs its ancient little trick. Against those saturated Carpathian greens, the colours look almost indecently bright, a small mutiny against the drizzle. There is something wonderfully unreasonable about standing in the rain and being rewarded for it. Your jacket is damp, the rocks glisten, distant forests blur beneath gauze-like cloud, and suddenly nature produces something no itinerary could have promised. Perhaps mountains are at their most beautiful when they stop behaving like scenery and become temperamental, alive, capricious. The rainbow will vanish. The rain will wander elsewhere.
