Where did time go? It’s just a balcony in Romania, until the Bucegi Mountains begin appearing between the clouds and the word “just” becomes ridiculous. White vapour drifts across their summits like torn linen abandoned by some careless god, revealing fragments of green, immense rockfaces and improbable blue before swallowing them again. From Cantacuzino Castle in Bușteni, the mountains do not sit politely on the horizon. They arrive. Forest climbing into stone, stone into cloud, cloud dissolving into a sky so blue it looks almost fabricated. Look long enough and the landscape begins misbehaving. Forests become dark green oceans stranded thousands of feet from any shore. The exposed cliffs rise through them like the vertebrae of some prehistoric animal sleeping beneath Romania. These are the Southern Carpathians, shaped across geological immensities that make a human lifetime feel like a match struck in a cathedral. Clouds snag on ridges, sunlight leaks through, and suddenly one rockface burns silver while another disappears into milk-white nothingness. Minutes later, the mountains rearrange themselves again. Perhaps this is what we travel to find: that rare moment when the machinery inside our heads finally shuts the hell up. The Prahova Valley lies somewhere below while those colossal green shoulders disappear into cloud, and suddenly time, distance and importance become difficult to measure. The castle behind you was built by men dreaming of permanence; the mountains ahead offer the quieter joke that permanence was already here.
