Where do rails lead? There is something faintly illicit about boarding a train while Romania is still rubbing the sleep from its eyes. Dawn leaks across the carriage windows, villages materialize from the blue-grey murk, and the rails begin their old metallic sermon beneath your feet. Bucharest recedes. The Carpathians wait somewhere ahead. You have coffee of questionable pedigree, nowhere urgent to be, and that delicious suspicion that the day might become something you never planned. Romania was stitched together by rail long before highways began bullying their way across the landscape. The first railway on the territory of modern Romania opened in 1854 between Oravița and Baziaș, and today some of the country’s most memorable journeys still crawl through valleys, forests and mountain passes where speed would almost feel indecent. At sunrise, the ordinary becomes strangely cinematic: frost-white fields, solitary stations, dogs inspecting empty platforms, church spires puncturing the mist. The window becomes a moving confession booth, revealing places you’d probably never stop for if you had a steering wheel in your hands. Maybe that’s the peculiar grace of the train. You surrender control and, in exchange, start noticing things again. A forgotten hamlet. Smoke climbing from a chimney. The first blade of sunlight cutting across a compartment like molten brass. Travel isn’t always about arriving somewhere impressive; sometimes it’s about being temporarily unaccountable to destination, schedule and common sense. So where would you get off?
