This isn’t my style I can promise you and I’m so apprehensive about posting this… but I know someone might need to hear it. And I took inspiration from @hongsta_gram and his journey. At 45, I decided to take up BJJ. Not for the first time — I’ve done bits over the years — but never seriously. If I’m honest, I didn’t like being on the floor, getting up and down all the time. Sounds ridiculous, I know. I’ve done a lot of martial arts — boxing, kickboxing, Thai boxing — and like most kids in the 80s, karate. I was never amazing, but I always enjoyed it. Boxing especially, when I was at @roundoneboxing and we had a little team, and with @keith_grant_theboymin — I was probably the fittest I’ve ever been. But after my mum passed away from dementia, I didn’t want to get hit in the head anymore. And if I’m honest, I lost the drive to train for a while. Put on a fair bit of timber too — second photo was 108kg. Then Monty started BJJ with @denis_kelly_mma. I found myself back in the gym with him. A few good conversations with Denis and @s0nnytine … and a lot of thinking. Because I knew — if I started, that was it. I couldn’t stop. How could I expect Monty to keep going if I didn’t? So I committed. One of the best decisions I’ve made. I also got some online help from @alimacleans , who set me up with a program and kept me accountable for the first 6 months. Those habits are still with me. Today was my 100th session. And it’s given me more than I expected. Not just the people — incredibly supportive and generous with their time and knowledge. Not just the deeper connection with Monty. But something else. Peace. 100 hours of it. There is nothing like being completely helpless and getting crushed — it leaves you clearer than anything else I’ve found. Today I’m 97kg — down 11kg — and my @whoop tells me I’m as fit as a 38.7-year-old, not 46.4. That’s great… but if I’m honest, it’s just the cherry on top. If you’re reading this and thinking, I need to lose some weight… or start something — especially in your 40s — this is the time. There is no better time. This is it. Now is the best time. #bjj #over40fit #keepfit #stayfit
