How have I spent so much time around Benalmádena and never really appreciated that THIS was here?! 🏰 Castillo de Colomares looks like somebody crossed a Beauty and the Beast village with a fairytale castle and a slightly bonkers stone pirate ship 😂 But it isn’t actually an ancient castle at all. It was built between 1987 and 1994 by Dr Esteban Martín Martín, with the help of two local master bricklayers, as an extraordinary monument to Christopher Columbus and the voyage to the Americas. And the detail is incredible. There are Gothic, Romanesque, Byzantine and Mudéjar influences all mixed together, with representations of La Niña, La Pinta and La Santa María actually incorporated into the architecture. It’s not huge. You can wander around it quite happily in under half an hour but it’s just SO pretty and unusual — and at €3.50 for general admission, I think it’s absolutely worth seeing. If you’re staying anywhere around Benalmádena or the Costa del Sol, put this one on your list. A proper little hidden gem and definitely a Rachel Really Recommends. Save this for your next Costa del Sol trip 🇪🇸 #benalmadena #costadelsol #spaintravel #hiddengem #rachelreallyrecommends
