Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney called for an end to the trade war between his country and the U.S. on Tuesday, urging the Trump administration to “start being serious” after talks between the two sides broke down late last month. “When the Americans stop doing memes, stop throwing shade, stop trying to be tough and start being serious about having those discussions, we can have those discussions,” Carney told reporters in Ottawa. “It’s not constructive, but that’s their democracy.” The collapse of the August negotiations between the two neighbors meant that 50% tariffs on around $20 billion of Canadian goods went into effect. Canada announced retaliatory tariffs on U.S. goods, including steel, dairy products, appliances, farm equipment and toilet paper, that will take effect on Sept. 8. President Donald Trump has also threatened to impose a 50% tariff on cars, trucks, automotive parts and steel from Canada starting next year. The diplomatic divide has also deepened after Trump’s decision to rename Lake Ontario to Lake America. He has also repeatedly referred to Canada as the “51st state.” Carney's comments came after voters in three special elections delivered wins for his Liberal Party and strengthened his hold on Parliament. A Liberal lawmaker told the Canadian Broadcasting Corp. that "the United States is getting a message tonight. Our leader has the support of the Canadian people." Carney also responded to a social media post from Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth mocking the Canadian military. “It’s beneath their office,” the prime minister said when asked for his reaction.
