
We're restoring the wild heart of Europe. 📍High in Romania's Southern Carpathian mountain range, the Făgras mountains shelter the largest remaining tract of primary forest in Europe — 10,000 hectares of wild beauty. Yet decades of large-scale clear cutting and salvage logging have severely degraded this regional treasure, leaving fragmented habitats, damaged soils, and vulnerable monoculture plantings. The area you see is part of a multi-year effort supported by One Tree Planted, where local communities were engaged to plant 1.2 million trees on land that was stripped bare between 2005 and 2015. On the forest floor, life is returning to places where heavy machinery once severely compacted the soil. Forest plants are pushing out of the ground, water is sinking deep into the earth, and microscopic organisms are hard at work beneath the soil. Over time, these changes will help downstream river systems that have been affected by heavy sedimentation, damaging their delicate aquatic life. The growing trees will also benefit wildlife in a region that shelters iconic large carnivores such as the brown bear, grey wolf, and Eurasian lynx, alongside rare bird species like the European capercaillie, populations of red and roe deer, and the reintroduced European bison. This work is laying the foundation for a future where forests, wildlife, and local communities can thrive in greater harmony. 🎯Project Goals: Restore native biodiversity and rebuild healthy, climate-resilient forest in a hotspot of European biodiversity. 🚀Impact: During this phase of a larger project, 545,000 trees were planted across 171 hectares to revitalize native forest structure and ecological function. 🌱Planting Method: Reforestation, natural regeneration, and erosion control, designed in accordance with Romanian law. A combination of trees and shrubs were planted, prioritizing native biodiversity and including species such as: Beech (Fagus sylvatica), Silver Fir (Abies alba), Sycamore (Acer pseudoplatanus), Spruce (Picea abies), Grey alder (Alnus incana), Dwarf pine (pinus mugo), and Juniperus (Juniperus communis). Note: Satellite imagery reflects data availability and may vary due to factors like cloud cover, revisit rates, and cost. Despite these variables, visible vegetation recovery in previously degraded areas demonstrates restoration progress.
