Grief is messy & complicated & heavy. “This Side of Heaven” is track #8 on my new album Church Pew & is one of the most personal songs I’ve ever written… and the first time I’ve ever written about grief & death. I wrote "This Side of Heaven" about my Aunt Sharon who we lost to cancer a few years ago. Losing her has been my first experience with grief. It's the very first song we wrote for the album. Losing Aunt Sharon has become a pivotal part of my life & my journey with my faith. It's messy. It's heavy. It's devastating. It was really important to us that we didn't wrap the song up in a bow. We wanted the feeling & lyric to convey the heaviness of navigating death as a believer. My hope is that this song gives people space to feel the complexity of grief while also being reminded that they're not alone in it. 🤍
