Mariana is an oceanographer from Brazil whose work began in research. She studied marine heat waves in the South Atlantic, and most of her science communication happened inside academic spaces. Coming aboard OceanXplorer gave her a different view of what ocean science could look like: collaborative, visual, public, and deeply human. “If we don’t connect people emotionally with the ocean, we won’t make them feel part of it.” That belief now shapes much of her work. Mariana teaches, she builds ocean projects for teenagers, and creates ways for young people to feel closer to the ocean. For her, connection is where action begins.
